The neck, also known as the cervical spine, is made up of nerves, muscles, bones and joints. Nerves run from the brain to different parts of the body through the neck and therefore, any kind of pain or irritation along the nerve pathway running through the neck can affect the whole body.

The neck, also known as the cervical spine, is made up of nerves, muscles, bones and joints. Nerves run from the brain to different parts of the body through the neck and therefore, any kind of pain or irritation along the nerve pathway running through the neck can affect the whole body. People often experience neck pain due to maintaining an incorrect posture at work for long hours or sleeping with their neck in the wrong position. Such pain can be dealt with by consciously correcting posture however, chronic neck pain, caused by more serious underlying medical reasons, needs to be managed through a combination of surgery, medication and physical therapy (depending on the nature of the pain).

Causes of Neck Pain

  1. Injury – Accidents on the road, at construction sites or even falls can cause serious neck injury that, in most cases, affects the spinal cord. Such injuries are the reason for chronic neck pain.
  2. Meningitis is an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and the spinal cord. Meningitis often causes a stiff neck (along with fever) that can last for a long time if not treated properly. This is a fatal condition and should be reported to the doctor immediately.
  3. Rheumatoid arthritis is often caused by inflammation of the joints between the bones in the neck. This condition needs to be treated with a combination of medication, surgery and physical therapy.
  4. Herniated cervical disc (or slipped disc)

Studies have shown that 90% of Americans experience some kind of spine and pain in their lifetime. Most people seek medical help from their doctors, take medications and/or get invasive procedures done to eliminate pain. However, some kinds of pain can only be managed through physical therapy and lifestyle changes. For instance, post-injury and post-surgery long-term pain cannot be eliminated immediately. Physical therapy offers just the right solution and actually helps prevent surgery in herniated disc patients, if symptoms are addressed earlier on.

Physical therapy aims to educate the patients about their affected muscles, improve posture, restore muscle flexibility and strengthen the affected area through exercises. By the end of the program, we hope that our patients will feel comfortable and confident enough to return to their normal day to day activities to the best of their abilities. After completion of the rehabilitation program the counselors give the patients return-to-work, return-to-school or outpatient services for continuing ideal care.
